maybe it was a yes for me then - lessons i’m learning from the millenials in my life

Thank you for being here today with this quiet little conversation, this place where I am holding a space for you to pause and engage with these thoughts, words and images

I've been trying to emulate something I've noticed people from the milennial generation I'm exposed to are very good at. They are incredible researchers and evaluators of massive amounts of information. They are able to quickly discern what is relevant and reasonable and come to a conclusion that is appropriate for that moment in time. They aren't attached to that being the answer forever, or even ever again because who knows what additional information may become available the next time they come to that decision point.

It's quite interesting really. No need to store that list of brands in your head, or that model or version or colour of something. I've been experimenting with various things to see where the decision was a yes for me in the past, and where it may not actually be a yes for me now. My generation was conditioned for brand recognition and loyalty for many years. I think it's less of a thing now.

As always I look for ways to apply this both in my art practice and my life practice, looking for places where I can evolve in my processes and ways of moving through the world.

In studio news, as day 46 of the ongoing construction project passes I am optimistic I will regain access to my studio space soon (while it is true that I thought this same thing 3 weeks ago, the odds are increasingly in my favour). In the meantime I'm spending some time with my watercolour paints and paper, experimenting with my brushes, and the lush pigments of the paints from Beam Paints

And as always, I want to express my gratitude to be living and working on the ancestral & unceded territories of the hən̓̓qəmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples.I honour the incredible depths of grace, courage and perseverance of Indigenous Peoples, and look to them as an example as they find their voices amidst the noise and obfuscation of colonization.

until next time,

Mardell
